Ivar's bodyguards were his's royal hird. After the conquest of York, Ivar formed his personal bodyguard to consolidate his power. These men wore Ivar's colors on their sheilds to show their allegiance. After the conquest of Kattegat by Ivar and Harald, they were elevated from housecarls to Ivar's royal hird.
